Karaite Synagogue, Cairo: 2 photos, 55 years apart

At the (now closed) Karaite synagogue, Abbasiya, Cairo...

President Mohamed Naguib, 1955

Some random blogger, 2010, at the very same spot.

Friends (you know who you are) - Happy 5771.

(more photos of the Jewish sites of Cairo may be found here.)

[I mistakenly wrote earlier that was the Bassatine synagogue - sorry for the mix-up.]

Somebody actually took all the round ornaments from beneath the marbel railing, pretty sad.

Synagogues are so often disappointing buildings, since they're built with a sense of modesty rather than grandeur. I remember the one's in Cairo as being particularly striking. Not over the top, but well-proportioned and church-like. They're the work of a special community that produced at least one of my favorite musicians (Moustaki).

Eid fitr sa'id and keep blogging strong.

Thank you! Going well, almost done. :)

Yuval
I also noticed the missing ornaments yesterday.

This synagogue is a Karaite one - whose houses of worship are very minimalistic by design. If you look at the link I added at the bottom of the post, the facade of the synagogue itself shows that - quite massive, few ornaments, big clean white and simple.

Thanks for the Eid wishes!

Thanks for sharing the photos. Now that you've piqued my interest, I've had to go and research what is a Karait Jew. Hmmm, not sure if the Israeli rabbinate would accept them as Jews....Anyone else have insight on that?

Happy Eid!

Thaaaank you. :-)

Yep, Jewish calendar. They're a few millennia ahead I guess. :-)

Zendette
I think they're a pretty old sect, and there's a karaite community in Jerusalem... but i wouldn't know any more on what the rabbinate would think, clearly!
Thanks for the eid wishes!

Salam Syawal,
Great articles! I was in Cairo a few years back. It was brief, for work. Wish I can return soon, didn't get to explore.
